Trams from Granton to Edinburgh BioQuarter / Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and beyond

The route we are proposing

With a west to east tram route from the Airport to Newhaven now successfully running, we are proposing to extend this with a north to south route.

The proposed route would run from Granton to the South-East and can be broken into three main sections

  • Granton to the city centre. This would comprise of one route from Granton to Ferry Road / Crewe Toll and two alternative route options from Ferry Road / Crewe Toll to the city centre.
  • City centre to Edinburgh BioQuarter and Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh in the south
  • Potential extensions beyond to Midlothian and East Lothian.

A map of Edinburgh showing the route a proposed new tram network would take from the north near the sea to the south of the city.

Why we have chosen this as the next route for expansion

Based on a high-level appraisal of benefits, including an assessment of future development opportunities, Granton and the south-east via Edinburgh BioQuarter corridors scored more strongly than other potential routes at this time. The longer-term aspiration for the city is to continue to develop public transport. Further detail on why these routes have been chosen can be found in the Edinburgh Strategic Sustainable Transport Study Phase 2 report (PDF).

We have also undertaken a review of policies that relate to the tram and the routes that are being proposed. Download and read the Policy Context and Conflicts report (PDF).

Indicative costs to build the new north to south route range from £2 billion to £2.9 billion depending on which route is decided to progress with between Granton and the city centre.

Journey times between key destinations also vary depending on the route chosen between Granton and the city centre.
