Edinburgh BioQuarter into the City Region

ºÚÁÏÉç is liasing closely with Midlothian and East Lothian ºÚÁÏÉçs and SEStran, the regional transport partnership, regarding the potential for mass transit connections beyond the Edinburgh BioQuarter and Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and regional business case is being developed. This is an initiative that identified in , which looks to deliver the vision, priorities and outcomes that are set out in the .

Key destinations into the South-East that could be potentially served by mass transit include:  Niddrie, Fort Kinnard, Newcraighall Park and Ride, Queen Marget University, Musselburgh Rail Station and Shawfair.

A route eastward from Edinburgh BioQuarter via Niddrie Mains Road has been safeguarded as part of City Plan 2030.  Short to medium term public transport solutions to support the Niddrie area are currently being developed as part of the Craigmillar and Niddrie Living Well Locally project. We will look at longer term proposals to cater for public transport demand in Niddrie through the wider Regional Business Case work.

Beyond Fort Kinnard, mass transit links with Newcraighall Park and Ride would create interchange opportunities and further eastwards, an extension towards Musselburgh Railway station would connect with the East Coast Mainline services and also service the new Queen Margeret University (QMU) which currently has almost 7,000 students and over 500 staff.

In addition to creating mass transit links with QMU, a second more southernly route to Shawfair (a NPF4 development site) would provide cross boundary access to Edinburgh BioQuarter / Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, business, leisure, Cameron Toll and employment opportunities. A connection with the Borders Railway at Shawfair would offer the potential for high quality interchange opportunities which would, in effect, extend the reach of mass transit deep into Midlothian and the Scottish Borders.
